Use Canva's AI to Build Professional Therapy Materials

Tool:Canva
AI Feature:Magic Write + AI Image Generation
Time:10-15 minutes
Difficulty:Beginner

What This Does

Canva's built-in AI tools let you create polished therapy handouts, parent education sheets, articulation flashcard layouts, and clinic posters without any design experience — and without buying materials from third-party sites.

Before You Start

  • You have a free Canva account at canva.com (free plan works)
  • You're logged in
  • You have a specific material in mind (a handout, a poster, an activity sheet)

Steps

1. Find the AI feature

Open Canva and click Create a design in the top right. Select a format: A4 Document for handouts, Presentation for activity slides, or Poster for clinic wall materials. Once your blank design opens, look for the Magic Write button in the left sidebar under "Apps" — or click the AI icon.

2. Tell it what you need

Click Magic Write and type what you want it to write. Be specific: "Write parent instructions for practicing /r/ sounds at home with a 7-year-old. Bullet points. Simple language. Include 3 example activities." Magic Write generates the text directly onto your canvas in the design you've selected.

3. Lay out your design

After the text is generated, click into it to edit. Use Canva's toolbar to change fonts, colors, and sizing. Add visuals: click Elements on the left sidebar, search for relevant images (e.g., "mouth," "child playing," "food"), and drag them into your layout. Canva's stock library has thousands of free clinical-adjacent images.

4. Review and use the result

Once satisfied, click ShareDownloadPDF Print for crisp printing. For digital sharing with families, use PDF Standard or share via link.

Real Example

Scenario: You need a home practice sheet for a 5-year-old working on /s/ blends in words (sl-, sm-, sn-, sp-, st-).

What you type into Magic Write: "Create a home practice sheet for parents. Title: 'Practice /s/ Blends at Home.' Include: 10 practice words (use sl, sm, sn, sp, st blends), a simple activity idea, and a spot to record daily practice for one week. Friendly tone."

What you get: Generated text with a word list, instructions, and a tracking table — all styled in your chosen Canva template. You add a smiling child clipart from the elements library and download in 10 minutes.

Tips

  • Search Canva templates for "therapy" or "handout" to start from a pre-designed layout instead of a blank page
  • Use your clinic's colors for brand consistency: click the color swatches and enter your hex code
  • For multi-page handouts (e.g., a booklet), use Canva's Add a new page button to build multiple connected pages
